Cy Wood's Bio
Cy currently works as an educator in the Cincinnati area, teaching musical theater to students at Butler Tech. He recently moved to Ohio after living and working in New York City for nearly a decade. While in NYC, Cy worked as a professional actor, producer, special events coordinator, and creative director. Some shows that he has been involved with include current and past Broadway, Off-Broadway, Special Events and National Tours namely: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee Reunion, Bombshell in Concert, Kinky Boots, Pippin, After Midnight, Peter and the Starcatcher, Evita, RENT, Flashdance, Murder for Two, and Triassic Parq to name a few. As a professional actor, Cy has performed across the world in many Broadway and Disney Productions including Annie, Oklahoma!, Cats, She Loves Me, Sunset Boulevard, Into The Woods, The Diamond Horseshoe Revue (Disney), and Big Band Beat (Disney). Cy holds a BFA from Brigham Young University where he graduated with a Music, Dance and Theater degree with an emphasis in Music Education.
Cy grew up as a third-generation barbershopper. He and his three brothers love to sing the old songs whenever they are together. His mother sang barbershop with her sisters, as did her father with his brothers. Growing up, the family's car trips were filled with the whole family harmonizing down the roads of Idaho. The in-laws of the Wood family know that they must sing the melody of Happy Birthday, lest the melody be M.I.A.
Cy finally joined the Idaho Gateway Chorus when he was 15 years old. The barbershop bug had bitten him hard. On any given day, the locals of Pocatello, Idaho could hear Cy belting along with his favorite recordings of Suntones, Bluegrass Student Union, Keepsake, or The Gas House Gang while he zipped down the road in his newly painted '78 VW Beatle. He was even pulled over for speeding once, because while he was posting along with Tony De Rosa, he didn't realize that his foot was slamming on the gas!
While studying in college, Cy was asked to be in High Flight, a competitive collegiate quartet. Though they were together only a few months, they won the Rocky Mountain District collegiate contest, and later went on to place 12th at the 2006 International Competition. Cy sung baritone.
Currently, Cy sings baritone with a BHS Top Ten Chorus, Southern Gateway Chorus. He also sings bass in a new mixed quartet, Half and Half.
He joined NYC's acclaimed chorus Voices of Gotham in 2012 and was quickly asked to be the baritone section leader as well as a board member at large. In 2013, Cy was asked to be VoG's Choreographer and Presentation Leader. He has had his work performed on the international stage as well as many stages in North America including Carnegie Hall. Upon his move to the Cincinnati area in 2015, Cy joined up with the ever acclaimed Southern Gateway Chorus (currently ranked 10th in the world) and is the Performance Director.
In addition to his active coaching and chorus lifestyle, Cy was the baritone of On Tap. This quartet won the Mid-Atlantic District Northern Division Contest in 2014 and 7th place at the MAD District competition. On Tap entertained their audiences until their disbandment in 2015 due to two of the members moving away from NYC.
COACH, Choreographer and Cheerleader
Cy would love to help your chorus or quartet reach their goals and hone your craft of barbershop. Cy is a trained dancer, a well-studied student of the Presentation and Showmanship categories, and an enthusiastic teacher and coach. His attention to detail helps marry the desired results with the music, lyric, singing, and expression of any performance piece.
Cy's mantra is honesty. Honesty in creation, honesty in production, and honesty in performance. Barbershop is a wonderfully unique and traditional art form, and Cy believes the more honesty we can bring to our audiences around the world, the more people will connect to the messages each barbershopper has to offer. Cy can genuinely bring your ensemble together through honesty, in honesty.
Cy also strongly believes that barbershop should be incredibly, totally, and unapologetically fun. He loves to bring in a bit of magical joy with with each ensemble he works with. Smiles, laughter, and camaraderie are the reason Cy is a barbershopper! Check out FUNbershop. A Facebook group dedicated to making rehearsal as fun as possible!
